Biography Kate McCaffrey

Kate McCaffrey was born in Liverpool in 1970 and immigrated to Australia November 1972. She graduated Wanneroo Senior High School in 1987, having no real idea of what she wanted to be, just that she wanted to go to university. Kate entertained many different career options from vet, to lawyer and even foreign diplomat- though Kate didn’t have a second language. She always wanted to write, though HER Mum who agreed Kate should too, strongly encouraged her to “have something to fall back on”.

She completed her Bachelor of Arts at UWA in 1990 with a double major in English and Fine Art and a minor in History. Kate decided she wanted to travel, and having a teaching qualification would be useful, though she never wanted to be a teacher. In 1991 Kate completed her Diploma in Education at UWA.

From 1992- 1995 Kate was an English and Art teacher at Warwick SHS, and though it was difficult to interest some kids in reading, Kateloved being a teacher.

In 1996 Kate started teaching at John Forest SHS, but left during the year for the birth of her daughter Savannah and to travel through Europe. It was during this pregnancy that Kate decided to start writing the novels she thought her students would have liked. Kate began her first manuscript With Vinegar and Brown Paper.

She back to teaching part-time at Clarkson Community College, and continued to try and get her manuscript published. The rejection process began and it was during this time Kate met some great people in publishing who encouraged her to continue writing.

Kate left Clarkson Community College just in time for the birth of her second daughter Willow. Now Kate was writing full-time, in between breast-feeding and nappy-changing.She began entering competitions and joined any writer’s association taht she could find. Kate wrote another three manuscripts in this time, (two YA and one adult). One of them was Destroying Avalon (originally titled A Person of Interest) which received attention from Janet Blagg at FACP, and became her first published novel.

She is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Creative Writing at UWA under the supervision of Brenda Walker and is working on her second piece of adult fiction. [updated 1st Feb]
